At Home Hair Coloring 101

Whether you want to color your hair to cover those pesky grays, or you just want to change your look, you can achieve good results by coloring your hair at home. If you have never colored your hair yourself, following is a quick primer on how to do it.

Choose your hair color kit

Before you purchase a hair color kit, you must make a number of choices. First, decide how long you want the color to last. For a short-lived color change, choose temporary color that washes right out or semi- or demi-permanent color that washes out after several shampoos. For more long-lasting color, choose permanent hair color that lasts until your hair grows out, or you color it again. Next, choose the color you want. To camouflage gray hair, choose a color that is similar to your normal shade but slightly lighter.

Perform a patch test

Because some people are allergic to the ingredients in hair color, it is recommended that you perform a patch test 48 hours prior to coloring your hair. Mix a small amount of the hair color, and apply it to a patch of skin. If you note any allergic reaction, do not use that hair color. It is recommended that you do a patch test each time you color your hair.

Prepare

Open the hair color box, and read the directions. Gather all the necessary materials. Wear an old robe, or cover your clothing with an old towel; use something that you can toss out in case you accidentally spill any hair coloring product.

Follow the instructions

While each hair color kit is unique, they have similar manners of application. Most supply plastic gloves that you must wear throughout the coloring procedure. Mix the hair color as directed, and use clips to section your hair. Apply the hair color liberally to each section; avoid rubbing the hair color into your scalp or getting any of it on your skin or in your eyes. After applying color to all your hair, wait a certain amount of time before you rinse it off. Consult the directions for the prescribed time frame. Once the appropriate amount of time has elapsed, rinse your hair. If the kit contains a conditioner, apply that to your hair according to the directions and rinse. Now you are ready to style your hair as usual.

While having your hair colored at a salon is easier, it is also more costly and inconvenient. Try coloring your hair at home for results that look good, and are easy on your wallet.
